For my project this week I have emailed the Director of Public Safety Michael Papadopoulos in order to continue progress with my project and to see if he has a map of existing security cameras on campus. Otherwise, I have been examining many satellite and base maps of the Siena campus and I have narrowed the selection down to the two shown above. A base-map or satellite image will be used to plot points that correspond with security cameras on campus. I am in between these two images because I think the defined walkways shown on the top base-map are important when I obtain a final product so the users of the map can better identify where the cameras are in relation to where they are walking or spending time on campus. The bottom satellite image does not have as defined walk was as the top map although the bottom map includes trees which will be very important when the coverage area is mapped in ArcGIS. When I map the coverage area, trees will play a role in blocking the visibility of the cameras mapped.

Moving Forward: As I move forward with my course project next week, I will await the response from Michael Papadopoulos. Depending on what he says I will either have to go out in the field and map the locations of the cameras or in the case that he does have a map of the existing cameras I map be able to manually put locations into ArcGIS. Also, I will continue to determine which map will provide a better final product.

  1. I agree with you that both of those maps would be beneficial for your project. Looking at the satellite one, it may just get cluttered and look really busy with all the added things to look at. Maybe you could include both for your project but focus on using the top one to add more layers because that one would probably turn out easier to read? Looking forward to seeing all the mapped camera coverages no campus though!

  2. As with Lauren, I also agree both of the maps are beneficial for this project. The satellite image may be hard to read when plotting out your camera locations, and get over crowded. I would try to stick to the more basic map, as the layout will be a lot easier to read and understand!
